(Fig. 3a) We speculate that this section of the signature may be a memorial to Goya's daughter Maria who died in 1785. An angel holding a light is just above the letters MG and a candle is under his daughter's initials. Goya may be consoling his wife in the next scene. A light on an inverted cross is just under the body of the man and may be symbolically lighting up a family gathering (in white) under the signature & date.
